A universal welcome to all prospective and current patients, eye residents, ophthalmologists, oculoplastic surgeons, fellow ocularists and visitors to our web site.
For all prospective patients: The Jahrling family tradition of craftsmanship and quality of personalized care ensures that your prosthetic eye will be as comfortable, natural in movement and lifelike in appearance as circumstances will allow. We know that losing an eye or lack of an eye is a very physical and emotional experience, and our caring professional staff will try their very best to help you or your child make a smooth and quick transition back to a normal life.
For all referring medical/surgical/primary care physicians: Our ocular prosthetic expertise ranges from pediatric anophthalmos/microphthalmos (i.e. non-surgical expansion of the eyelids and orbital tissues) to geriatric socket and atonal eyelid conditions. Another specialty is the impression molded scleral cover shell prosthesis to restore palpebral fissure symmetry and cosmesis over a blind, scarred, disfigured globe.
Jahrling Ocular Prosthetics, Inc. is a second generation family firm formed in 1962 by Raymond C. Jahrling. Raymond's children Joyce, Eric and Kurt each started their apprenticeship with the firm after completing their college education.
Joyce, Eric and Kurt's apprenticeship included over 10,000 hours of hands-on training, plus taking the required educational credited courses offered by the American Society of Ocularists for their Board Approved Diplomate Ocularist (BADO). They were awarded certification by the National Examining Board of Ocularists (NEBO) in 1981, 1987 and 1989, respectively. Ray's granddaughter Kori Jahrling Malouin followed in her grandfather's and father's footsteps, becoming a Board Certified Ocularist and is now practicing in Orlando, Florida.
All of the Jahrlings have previously served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Ocularists, and Kurt formerly served as a Chairman on the National Examining Board of Ocularists.
Our joint family experience, together with continuing education credits assures us of a share in the leadership of our profession.
Raymond majored in a 4-year Commercial Art and Mechanical Drawing in a technical trade school which included weekend courses at the Chicago Museum of Fine Arts. After graduation, and military service in WWII, he completed 3½ years of a 5-year college course in Industrial Engineering & Design. At this time he took a sabbatical to gain practical use and knowledge of plastics. A sabbatical that would turn into a career!
Unbeknownst, this background in art, physics and chemistry, made him amply qualified to begin training in both fabrication and fitting of plastic ocular prostheses. (Note: This was during the 'transitional era' when the eye making profession was converting from the 'glass eye' to the 'plastic ocular prosthesis.') Mager & Gougelmann, Inc. was his employer in Chicago (1949). Because of this background, the apprenticeship progressed quickly to managing M&G;'s Boston branch office.
In early 1953, a position was offered and accepted to work at Massachusetts Eye & Ear in Boston as a research assistant in plastic techniques in ophthalmology. The director of this project was Dr. Wm. Stone, Jr., who was one of the seven ophthalmologists present in September 1957 for the establishment of what is now the American Society of Ocularists. By late 1962, the invaluable 10 years of ophthalmic research experience led to the to establishment of the Jahrling Ocular Prosthetics lab.
