REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS:
There are two methods that can be used to remove the ocular prosthesis from the eye socket. Both would begin with the hands being washed thoroughly.
- REMOVAL WITH A SUCTION CUP: Moisten the end of the suction cup with water and squeeze it between the thumb and forefinger. Face a mirror and pull the lower lid down with the other hand. Press the flange surface of the suction cup gently on the front of the surface of the prosthesis on the iris color or slightly lower, making flush contact. Then, release the squeezing action, and the suction cup should adhere to the prosthesis. Hold the suction cup lightly, and pull the prosthesis forward, past the lower lid, and away from the cavity. Continue the pulling action until the entire prosthesis is withdrawn from the cavity.
- REMOVAL WITH THE FINGERS: Look upward into a mirror while pulling the lower lid downward. Have your forefinger on or as close to the eyelashes as possible. Continue pulling down on the lower eyelid until the edge of the prosthesis is visible. Then, apply inward and downward pressure toward the temple and the prosthesis should begin to slip out of the cavity. Be prepared to catch the prosthesis with the other hang.
REINSERTION INSTRUCTIONS:
- Wash hands thoroughly. Moisten the prosthesis with water or a wetting solution for easier insertion.
- Hold the prosthesis by the outer edges with the thumb and forefinger with the black dot(s) upward. Look into the mirror and place the thumb or a finger from the other hand on the upper eyelid and lashes and pull up toward the brow. This will create a large opening.
- Bring the prosthesis up past the lower lid and set it flush to the lid and orbital tissues and continue to insert the upper edge of the prosthesis under the upper lid until most of the iris portion is covered.
- Continue the upward motion by placing the index finger on the front surface of the prosthesis (the thumb and forefinger have been released). At this stage, you can release the upper lid and pull the lower lid downward; this should allow the entire prosthesis to be in the cavity.
